For the past few weeks in Delhi, the weather has been far from ideal. After enduring intense heat, we now face stifling humidity, making it difficult to stay motivated for workouts.
During the heatwave, I turned to the treadmill, and as the humidity peaked, my treadmill runs increased. With several races towards the end of the year, I had to reassess my goals and strategies.
First, I reminded myself of my 2024 objectives. Although the major races are over, the remainder of the year is crucial for preparing for the upcoming season, which includes a trip to Boston. So, I went a step ahead and got my qualification time verified No backsies now!
To stay motivated, I dress up for my runs as if I’m heading to a race with photographers present. I have been doing this for a while now. Dress as if you are stepping out for a race and there are race photographers. Trust me, you will feel great. When the motivation levels are too low, spread out your best running gear! Make every run special.
Focusing on the benefits also helps. I love high mileage weeks, especially when I crush a hard workout. On those early mornings when I’m tempted to sleep in, I think about the satisfaction on a Sunday afternoon of completing a week with all boxes checked. While the fear of failure haunts me, I know I must keep moving.
Variety is key. I’m fortunate to live in an area where I can easily switch from road to trail, and I have a collection of different shoes. This keeps my runs interesting and , there is no way I am bored of a particular route or a pair of shoes!
Rewards are essential. After a Sunday long run, I often treat myself to a lavish breakfast or a new piece of gear (without becoming addicted). It might seem indulgent, but I believe in pampering myself occasionally.
The hardest part of this season is often just getting out the door. Once you’re out there, you’ll likely feel much better and be glad you made the effort.
With climate change, conditions may not improve, so make the most of what you have and be grateful for your able body!
