Running in the summer can be very challenging compared to other seasons. Summer in India (except for the hills) is intense. Along with the fact that this is off season for many runners and the body would be recovering, runs are harder due to heat, and humidity.
When temperatures rise, your body must work harder to cool itself down through sweating. This can lead to faster dehydration and higher heart rates during runs and sometimes you wish you were home in an air-conditioned room. For summer runs always carry more hydration than other seasons and electrolytes are mandatory for longer outings.
Running in direct sunlight can raise your body temperature more quickly and increase the risk of sunburn and heat-related illnesses if proper precautions aren’t taken. Suncreen sunscreen sunscreen… this magic word should not be forgotten during this season. Usually I go to sleep with my sunscreen tube inside my shoes so I will never miss it before the run.
And then the humidity factor. High humidity levels can make it difficult for sweat to evaporate from your skin, which impairs your body’s natural cooling mechanism. This can make you feel hotter and more fatigued during your run.
Time of Day
What can save you from lot of discomfort is opting for an early morning run. Switching directly to 5 am starts were a challenge. I needed my sleep and waking up at 4 was an eternity ago! I had few 7 am starts this summer and those were frustrating. Trying to leave all 7 am starts for the easy runs these days!
And finally:
- Remember to Hydrate: Drink plenty of water before, during, and after your run to stay hydrated.
- Time Your Runs: Aim to run during cooler parts of the day.
- Dress Appropriately: Wear light-colored, moisture-wicking clothing that allows your skin to breathe.
- Protect Yourself: Use sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses to protect yourself from the sun’s rays.
- Listen to Your Body: Pay attention to signs of heat exhaustion or dehydration and adjust your pace or distance accordingly.
I know that even with all these precautions, next few months in Delhi is going to be cursing the weather!
Well, happy summer runs! 😊
